Family & Friends at New Student Orientation

Welcome, Bear families and support networks! We know this is an exciting transition for your student, and we want you to feel confident in their ability to thrive at UNC. Family and Friends Orientation will take place alongside your student's New Student Orientation session, offering you valuable insights and resources to support them.

There is no separate registration for Family & Friends Orientation. When your student registers for NSO, they will indicate the number of guests attending.

What to Expect

Family & Friends Orientation is designed to answer your questions and help you understand what it means for your student to join the Bear community. Please note that you and your student will participate in separate orientation programs.

During Family & Friends Orientation, you will:
Learn about UNC’s academic policies, expectations, and student success resources

Meet other families, university staff, and current students
Get insights into campus housing, student wellness, and safety services
Attend sessions on financial aid, billing, and how to support your student’s transition
Explore extracurricular activities and how students can get involved on campus

We encourage you to attend Family & Friends Orientation to learn how to best support your student as they navigate this exciting chapter.


Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a cost for Family & Friends Orientation?
No! Family and friends can attend at no cost.

Do family members need to register separately?
No, your student will indicate the number of guests attending when they register for NSO.

Where does Family & Friends Orientation take place?
It takes place at the Campus Commons and the University Center, the same location as student check-in for NSO.
